The IntelLEO project aims to support the learning and knowledge construction of adult workers in extended organizations that temporarily integrate different business or educational communities.

An Intelligent Learning Extended Organization (IntelLEO) is a new paradigm that represents a community that emerges as a temporal integration of two or more different business and educational communities and organizational cultures (industry, research, and education) and uses ICT technologies to support learning and knowledge building activities.
The goal of this project is to explore supporting technologies for cross-organizational collaborative learning and knowledge building activities. The technological developments will be embedded in a pedagogical framework that places a particular emphasis on harmonizing individual and organizational goals.

The pedagogical framework
Individual motivation is critical to successful collaborative learning and knowledge-building activities. Important motivating factors for collaborative activities and knowledge sharing are ownership, autonomy, positive feedback, trust, personal contact, etc. The pedagogical experts in IntelLEO define a framework of activities and processes that take these factors into account and create an environment where the needs of the individual and the organization are equally addressed.

The technological framework
The envisioned services that the IntelLEO technological framework will support are: Managing social interactions, Providing learning resources, Supporting appropriate learning and knowledge building activities for individuals and groups, Supporting the learning process of individuals in accordance with organizational goals and policies.
The new services will be validated in three different IntelLEO environments (business cases) involving different stakeholders from companies and educational institutions. Since the three contexts for validation are very heterogeneous, one of the greatest
Since the three contexts for validation are very heterogeneous, one of the main challenges for IntelLEO is to identify a set of common services that will be extended by specific customizations for each specific case.
Finally, the project will also look at the broader socio-economic context – beyond the three specific cases – to determine the potential applicability and usefulness of the proposed IntelLEO approach.

Expected end results

The project will deliver the following:

  • A new implementation framework that takes into account the best social constructivist and situated learning practices in collaborative learning and knowledge building, and focuses on motivational aspects
    an ontological framework for representing learning contexts that enables synergies between learning and knowledge building and harmonization services;
  • generic and generally applicable so-called core services that reflect the state of the art for managing
  • collaborative learning and knowledge building activities and content in an IntelLEO environment.Key deliverables of the first year:– Analysis of the state of the art to identify methods/tools relevant to the IntelLEO solution and key innovation needs;
    – Analysis and definition of three business cases to identify user needs in different cross-organizational environments;
    – Definition of the IntelLEO concept;
    – Early prototype of IntelLEO core services, framework and architecture.
