The proposal addresses the need of European manufacturing companies for a new model that goes beyond lean manufacturing and ensures the transformation of the company into a lean environment. This is intended to respond to customer and market demands for value creation, incorporating sustainability, culture and customization. Significant change in business performance can be achieved by adopting lean thinking throughout the product lifecycle. The goal is to develop a new model based on lean thinking that considers the entire product lifecycle and provides a knowledge-based environment to support value creation for customers in the form of innovation and customization, quality, and sustainable and affordable products. This is referred to as the Lean Product and Process Development (LeanPPD) paradigm. The knowledge required to create value in the LeanPPD model will be developed based on the European standard and an open architecture to ensure the integrity of data and knowledge and to create a lean environment across the product lifecycle and supply chain. The project will develop novel lean design tools to ensure the simultaneous consideration and development of a lean product design and an associated lean manufacturing system. The user-centric approach is ensured by the six Business Cases (BC) provided by the end users from different sectors in the consortium. These BCs are used to derive the requirements for the tools, methods and models to be developed, to test the developed solutions and to demonstrate the proposed concept in industry.
