The goal of the AsKoWi project is an assistance system that provides the user with situation- and task-related relevant information in a collaborative work environment. The relevant information is determined by the system on the basis of a classification that does not have to be made by the user, as is usually the case, but is derived from the observation of the actions of the employees, the knowledge interactions and the information disseminated in the network. The object of consideration is PDM/PLM systems (Product Data Management/ Product Lifecycle Management), which are used in the development of complex products to control product data and processes. Several people are involved in the development of a product, and PDM/PLM and other systems provide them with a large data and knowledge base. The AsKoWi assistance system will extend the existing knowledge management systems. For this purpose, the already existing information from different sources will be compiled and put into the context of the respective user in order to provide the USERS/operators with the best possible results without the need for complex search masks. Extending existing knowledge management systems requires a high degree of modularity in the architectural solution. A prerequisite for this is the ability to dock the various external modules. The results of this research project will be incorporated into future product generations of Contact Software GmbH’s PDM/PLM platform CIM DATABASE. The marketing of the new CIM DATABASE module promises considerable potential.

The partners have their sights set on the automotive industry and mechanical and plant engineering in particular as potential users, with their development and production processes based on a strong division of labor, but also on energy suppliers, the telecommunications industry, and other infrastructure operators.
