The main objective of SOCRATIC is to create a platform that will allow citizens and/or organizations to work together to find specific innovative solutions to achieve the global sustainability goals set by the United Nations. The platform will allow individuals, collectives, institutions, businesses or government to: (1) propose new challenges aimed at solving specific sustainability problems; (2) invite individuals or organizations to participate with innovative ideas to solve these problems; (3) jointly select and implement the most promising ideas.
SOCRATIC will also establish a Global Sustainability Challenges Observatory with a twofold objective: (1) measuring the impact of SOCRATIC actions on global sustainability challenges by monitoring social networks, (2) using data collected on social media about global sustainability challenges as a source of information to launch challenges on the SOCRATIC platform.
The SOCRATIC project takes a strong user-centered approach by using gamification techniques to engage users in sustainable use of the platform. The project involves a European NGO (CiberVoluntarios) and a group of young social innovators from the Experts in Team program at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU-EiT). Both collectives are active in different fields but share a common tool: the use of IT to empower citizens and achieve specific sustainability goals. The pilot projects will initially focus on three specific challenges: “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages (UN Goal 3),” “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all (UN Goal 4),” and “Promote sustainable, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all (UN Goal 8).
