The EFFRA recommendations on Factories 4.0 and beyond (Sept. 2016) clearly state that the development of large-scale experimentation and demonstration of data-driven “connected smart” Factories 4.0 is needed to maintain the competitiveness of European industry. BOOST 4.0 will address this need by demonstrating an open, standardized, and transformative shared data-driven factory 4.0 model using 10 lighthouse factories in a measurable and replicable way. BOOST 4.0 will also demonstrate how European industry can use Big Data to build unique strategies and competitive advantages at all stages of the product and process lifecycle (development, planning, operations, production, and customer service), building on the connected model of smart factory 4.0 to address the challenges of Industry 4.0 (distributed manufacturing in batch size 1, operation of zero-defect processes and products, sustainable operation without failures, agile customer-centric management of the manufacturing value network, and human-centric manufacturing). Our main objectives are:

1. building 10 Big Data lighthouse factories with intelligent networking (VW, FILL, AutoEuropa, +GF+, FIAT, Phillips, Volvo, GESTAMP, Benteler, Whirlpool).
2. providing the EU open framework BOOST 4.0 based on RAMI 4.0 and IDS and the governance model for both services and data assets.
3. assembling methodologies, resources, models, and communities to maximize the visibility, mobilization, replication potential, and impact (business, financial, standardization) of BOOST 4.0.

The investment leverage factor of BOOST 4.0 will be well above the 4:1 ratio and as high as 10:1. In terms of utilization, within 5 years after the end of the project, only the participating lighthouse factories will have direct follow-on investments of over 33 million euros (ROI 10.61), while the commercialization of BOOST 4.0 products on the market is expected to generate cumulative profits of 96 million euros (ROI 4.73) for the other partners
