DaimlerChrysler AG

Stuttgart - Germany

As a well-known manufacturer of high-quality vehicles, there is a strong need for DaimlerChrysler to use advanced manufacturing technology to maintain their position on the market. The work inside the PICK Project is done by central Production Planning/Production and Materials Technology (PP/PWT-VEM), the responsible division for Production Process Engineering and ICT technologies within DaimlerChrysler.

It is the job of the Process Engineering division to improve all manufacturing technology in automotive production and to bring it into internal, profitable use. PP/PWT-VEM has sound expertise in manufacturing automation. The connection of research, development and production offers an ideal basis for practice-oriented results.

The basic role of DaimlerChrysler as end user within PICK will be to define requirements, support specification and verify the developed ICT support tools for the process improvements concepts in the automotive industry. DaimlerChrysler will mainly test the business case "knowledge sharing over different plants (‘virtual’ enterprise)", and essentially contribute to solving the problems related to sharing of knowledge over different tasks within the process improvement (i.e. unique knowledge management). DaimlerChrysler will also be the project manager.

Mr. Ulli Fischer, born 1959, is the Project Manager of PICK. He finished his studies in computer science and mechanical engineering (Dipl.-Ing.) in 1987 and started work at DC in the design and implementation of ICT application. In 1989 Mr. Fischer became responsible for Flexible Manufacturing and Factory Communication Systems. He has been a representative in various national and international bodies and worked as a private lecturer at the Academic Institute of Stuttgart, specialised in CIME and Automated Manufacturing Technology. Today he is responsible for research and the introduction of new control technology and integrated factory systems at DC. Additionally he leads the DaimlerChrysler-wide Competence Team "Automation Technology".

Mr. Alexander Roth, born 1966, is responsible for the project work carried out at DaimlerChrysler. He finished his studies in process engineering (Dipl.-Ing./FH) in 1995 and started work at DC in the development department for cars in 1996.
